New York University and Quantum Machines will host “The NYC Qubit Tune-Up Challenge” on Monday, September 28, noon to 3 p.m., in Washington Square Park—a free public event where attendees can learn how to use the technological tools that will drive the next generation of computation: quantum computing.

Conventional computers process information in the form of digital bits (0s and 1s) while quantum computers deploy quantum bits, or qubits, which can not only store much more information, but also give programmers significantly greater maneuverability to run calculations—think of a butter knife vs. a Swiss Army knife.

At the event, attendees will receive a short introduction from NYU and Quantum Machines experts, then take part in a hands-on challenge. Just like a musical instrument needs to be tuned before playing, qubits must also be tuned before they can be used for computation. Attendees will try their hand at tuning up qubits, with the results appearing on a public leaderboard and highest-scoring participants being recognized for tuning their qubits the best.

The event showcases New York City’s growing quantum ecosystem, which includes NYU’s Center for Quantum Information Physics and Quantum Institute. The local collaboration between academia and industry—such as a recently announced NYU-IBM research program in quantum computing—to build the next generation of quantum talent and technology is currently combining public engagement, STEM education, and the city’s emergence as a quantum innovation hub.

“The NYC Qubit Tune-Up Challenge” is sponsored by NYU’s Quantum Institute.
